Body eel like and pointed, snout long, conical without transversely striated, dorsal line inserted above middle of the pectoral fin, 32-40 spines and 67-90 soft rays, anal fin with 3 spines and 56-90 soft rays.
Synonyms: Macrognathus armatus Lacepede, 1800; Mastacembelus armatus, Kottelat, 2001A; M. caudatus McClelland, 1842; M. hamiltonii McClelland, 1844; M. manipurensis Hora, 1921.
Diagnosis: Anal and dorsal fin confluent with caudal fin. Body eel like, 35-37 dorsal spines, 14-15 caudal fin rays.
Common names: Spiny eel, zig-zag eel, tyre track eel, chuchey bam
