Genus: Cirrhinus Cuvier
Body moderately elongated, abdomen rounded, snout depressed, often with pore. A wide, lower jaw, which is rather sharp, generally devoid of a horny covering but with a small symphyseal knob. Barbel 1-2 pairs or entirely absent. Dorsal fin rather short, inserted anterior to pelvic fins. Lateral line complete with 35-45 scales.

Diagnosis: Dorsal fin rays 3-4/13-15, anal 3/5, pectoral 1/18. Body elongated, its depth more than length of head. Snout not projecting beyond mouth. Barbel two well-developed pairs, nostril pair longer than maxillary barbel. Caudal fin deeply forked, lateral line with 42-46 scales.
